Facebook Launches New Social DJ Feature
post by KM Facebook merges music and technology for new group listening.Earlier today, the big blue social network began rolling out "Listen With," a new group chat feature that rivals that of Turntable.fm's music listening experience.
With "Listen With" buttons, users can choose a friend as a personal DJ and rock out to whatever song that that friend is playing...in real-time. In fact, up to 50 friends can participate in a listening chat room at one time.
Here's what Alexandre Roche, a product designer at Facebook, had to say:
Music is one of the most powerful and fun ways to connect. Whether it's at a concert with a bunch of people or on a long car ride with your best buddy, we love listening to music with our friends. But what if you could listen to music with your friends when you're alone, like at work, at home or on the go?With Facebook's latest blend of music and technology it appears as though we now can.
According to Alexandre, the feature works something like this:
- First, see what friends are listening to music by locating the "music note" in the chat sidebar.
- Next, hover over their name and click the "Listen With" button.
- Then, the music will play.
- Finally, discover new music when the DJ switches between tracks.
Sounds quite easy (pun intended).
The full roll out of "Listen With" will take place over the next few weeks.
What's your opinion on the social listening feature? Is Facebook's merger of music and technology going to halt the adoption of start-ups like Turntable.fm and Console.fm?
