10 Questions About How To Build A Fan Base

post by KM

Get a fan base
Every musician, band, artist and brand wants to get more fans and build the biggest fan base. Let's face it, an engaged fan base is the very heart of success, and building a fan base is the core of any artistic venture. The fans are the everything.

So, how does one get more followers and develop a large group of passionate, die-hard fans? Quite simply; by getting to know who their current fans are (assuming the musician, artist or brand has already created a small following).

Studying who the people are that come to live shows, buy CDs,  purchase merchandise, download songs and visit the website is the primary step in getting to understand the present fan base. These are the people who are the most valuable.

Step two is to study the habits and lifestyles of these fans. This will uncover who they are in great detail, and inspire creative ways of reaching them.

Here are 10 questions to help get to know the current fans:

  1. What's their age? (on average. ex. from 18-26)
  2. What's their gender? (if both male and female, which is dominant? ex. 70% male)
  3. Are they a mix of ethnic backgrounds or one specific background?
  4. Are they in school? (what kind of school? ex. high school, college, trade school)
  5. Are they religious people, spiritualists, or atheists?
  6. What kind of restaurants do they eat at? (ex. expensive places or fast food)
  7. Where do they shop for clothes?
  8. What are their hobbies and interests? (ex. reading novels, hiking, contact sports)
  9. What kind of movies and TV shows do they prefer? (ex. suspense, comedy, foreign)
  10. What websites do they visit regularly?
A clear understanding of the current fans will provide better insight on how to grow a larger fan base.
