6 Ideas For Better Band Sites

post by KM

Band sites
Let's talk about band sites. Many of the solo artist and band websites I come across do not offer their fans and visitors a branded and memorable experience. These band sites tend to be rarely updated and are usually static. This is not a good recipe. Bands and artists need to understand that their website has to be engaging and content oriented.

Band sites should provide a way to connect to fans, get to know them, and interact with them. In addition, a site for bands should be regularly updated, and convey the image of the artist(s). It should offer: music, blog posts, photos, and videos.

Fans and visitors make the decision to come to band sites so that they can be a part that world. They want to be informed, engaged, and entertained. If the site is old and static, not only is it not rewarding for the fans, but it is not rewarding for the band or artist.

Below I've listed 6 ideas that can aid musicians with the overall experience of their band site. These are not tips on how to start a website, rather they are ideas to incorporate into an existing site. Let's get started:

  • Music should be the central focus. A Soundcloud, ReverbNation, or Bandcamp player will work fine. I recommend a Soundcloud player for two reasons: customization and HTML5. These players can be tailor-fitted to the band site with both color scheme and song artwork. Plus, they will work beautifully on desktops/laptops and mobile tablet devices.
  • User content is a good thing. Allow fans to upload and/or embed their own photos and videos. Doing this is will encourage a community-type atmosphere.
  • Be sure there is a respectable comment section available. A Facebook comments plugin or Disqus comments widget will suffice.
  • No Flash. Not only is it not available on many mobile platforms, but it can get annoying and distracting. Look into CSS, HTML5.
  • Keep the design of the band site light. Make sure pages load fast, under 3 seconds preferably.
  • Don't forget the "Store" or "Shop" page. Fans want the option to purchase the latest CD, digital download, or t-shirt. Make it visible in the site navigation and easy to get to.
If you have any other ideas on how to make band websites more engaging and interactive please leave them in the comments section below. Cheers.
